The year is 1946. In the Bergen-Belsen displaced persons camp, a baby girl only a few months old is handed over for adoption. Accompanying her is a letter bearing the Hebrew words, “Don’t tell her anything.”

Fast-forward twenty-eight years. Mati leads a joyous life. She loves her job, she’s in love with a wonderful man, and her parents shower her with warmth and love. But everything changes when a deadly car accident leaves a void in her world. In their now-empty home, amidst memories, tears, and objects that have lost their purpose, Mati stumbles upon an old envelope that no one has ever shown her. Who were her true parents? Why did they relinquish her? Who is she really? Mati embarks on a journey that threatens to upset her predictable future, test her relationship, and unveil a burdensome secret. Will this journey be worth undertaking?

Don’t Tell Her Anything is the third book by Tamar Ohrenstein. Her debut novel, Anka’s Secret, was published in 2021 and was recently translated into English. Her affection for Florence, where she spent several years of her life, is vividly portrayed in her second book, If I Had Known, published in 2022.
